Gomantong Caves,

Gomantong Caves is the largest and most important source of edible birds nests in Sabah. Its situated 115km from Sandakan, a great run down in the old hire car for a day out (or part of, we also visitedSukau and the Kinabatangan River that day). The caves were visited a few years back by Micheal Palin on his travels and boasts the largest pile of bats pooh. It doesn't smell! The cave is shared by the swiftlets and bats. Its the black and the white swiftlet nests that are collected as a delicacy for the Chinees market. The harvesting season is done Feb, Apr and Aug yearly and is allowed under the provision of Wildlife Conservation act of 1997.
